On November 19, 2026, the Laos-Japan Institute became a vibrant center of cultural exchange as IV-JAPAN, a well-regarded non-governmental organization based in Japan, hosted an enriching demonstration of the traditional Japanese tea ceremony. The event welcomed 40 enthusiastic Lao students, offering them a unique opportunity to witness and participate in one of Japan’s most cherished cultural traditions.

Guided by experienced Japanese tea masters, the students were introduced to the elegant rituals and deep symbolism of the tea ceremony, known in Japan as “chanoyu” or “sado.” The meticulous preparation of matcha (powdered green tea), the graceful movements, attention to detail, and the tranquil atmosphere left participants fascinated and appreciative of the ceremony’s philosophy of harmony, respect, purity, and tranquility.

Students expressed their excitement and curiosity as they observed the intricate steps involved in making a perfect bowl of tea. Many had the chance to interact with the Japanese instructors, learning firsthand the proper techniques, including the precise way of whisking the tea and the etiquette observed during the ceremony. The interactive session made the experience especially memorable, as students were able to try making tea themselves under the guidance of the tea masters.

The demonstration not only deepened the students’ understanding of Japanese culture but also fostered warm connections between the Lao and Japanese communities. IV-JAPAN’s dedication to promoting cross-cultural awareness was evident in the joy and engagement of all who attended, making the event a resounding success for cultural diplomacy and education.
